COLOR, DECODED

Color Theory Foundations

Before structures and systems, designers think about color in three dimensions: hue, saturation, and lightness. Then they think in temperatures.

DIMENSION 01
Hue
The color itself. Red, blue, green. Position on the color wheel from 0 to 360 degrees.
DIMENSION 02
Saturation
How vivid or muted. 0% is gray, 100% is pure color. Most UI uses 30–70% saturation.
DIMENSION 03
Lightness
How light or dark. 0% is black, 100% is white. Controls hierarchy and accessibility.

Color Temperature

Every color has an emotional temperature. Warm colors (red, orange, yellow) feel energetic and close. Cool colors (blue, green, purple) feel calm and distant. Designers use temperature to set mood before they pick specific colors.

Warm

Red, orange, yellow. Energy, passion, urgency, appetite, intimacy. Used for food, fitness, sales, alerts.

Cool

Blue, green, purple. Calm, trust, focus, technology, professionalism. Used for SaaS, finance, healthcare, productivity.
